Vitamin C: Uncovered

Vitamin C is a prominent Celebrity among the skincare fanfare, a leading lady of sorts, but with a quiet hype. You know it is good for you without double guessing like you did with CBD oils or Gua Sha, and yet you are here, curious whether it is worth the buy.

Before we dive in, let’s make things clear: we will be uncovering topical usage of vitamin C, but if you feel the colds, consider the dietary supplements too.

So what are the benefits?

Although many beauty and self-righteous ‘medical’ platforms claim there are plenty, without further back-up or research (from boosting collagen production to melanin synthesis), there is one undeniable fact regardless of your understanding of how topical vitamins work, when you go layer all of that self-care-night-time routine. The common knowledge is: Vitamin C is one of the strongest antioxidants to target the tissue you wish to repair. Acne scars, pigmentation and uneven skin tones are all helpless when this baby marches in.

Despite the fact that Vitamin C protects against UV damage, it is extremely important that you only use your preferable product during the gloomy fall/winter seasons. According to your location, this may vary (we do get more sunny days in Italy). Limited sun exposure is critical when it comes to cosmetics with high concentration of this super star of immune boosters.

How do I pick the right one?

Know your skin. Do not believe every lady (or gentleman or non-binary) that you briefly consult with in your blind splurge in the skincare aisle. If you have been told that your skin is oily (or dry, or acne prone, or all of the above) and you have been following the ‘prescribed’ routine ever since, it is time to reconsider. Seek information from a certified dermatologist (more than one if you can afford it), and watch closely what happens to your skin throughout seasons and product changes.

If Vitamin C is truly the answer to minor pigmentation or minimal tissue scarring, or you wish to see the magical benefits for yourself, then examine the options available (and whatever is left in your bank account after the festivities). Whichever pretty bottle you pick, check for a couple of things on the back: must be ascorbic acid, concentrations of 10% or higher, at a low pH (3 or lower).

Kill two birds with one stone and look for double micronutrients. Vitamin C likes Vitamin A and Vitamin E. In short, A + C = controls break outs. C + E + Retinol = anti-age.

What is available?

Our team swears by The Ordinary’s ascorbic acid 8% + alpha arbutin 2% . It is a budget-friendly, cruelty-free treat with the great cocktail of Vitamin C and Alpha Arbutin (“a highly-purified biosynthetic active ingredient that reduces the look of dark spots and uneven skin tone”). It might leave a feeling of residue or oiliness, but you see the results immediately.

If you are feeling lush, try Agent Nateur’s holi (C) in powder. This acne banishing bundle of joy, that also claims to have anti-aging benefits, boasts on calcium derived from vegetables. Tip: mix it with a toner, thank us later.

If you are not ready to commit just yet, opt for a glow boosting facial or mask with ingredients that suit your complexion. This Works’ vitamin C power mask might just be the one for you.
